The epitome is the art of concentrating an ancient work into its purest essence. More than a simple summary, it recreates the "spirit of the original text" by rewriting and distilling it. Where the summary condenses, the epitome transmutes: it becomes a work in its own right, brief but imbued with the memory of the original.
L'épitomé est l'art de concentrer une œuvre ancienne en sa plus pure substance. Plus qu'un simple résumé, il recrée "l'esprit du texte" originel en le réécrivant, en le distillant. Là où le résumé condense, l'épitomé transmue : il devient une œuvre à part entière, brève mais habitée par la mémoire de la première.
